Mimmo Rotella
Italian, 1918-2006
Mimmo Rotella was born in Catanzaro, Italy, on October 7, 1918 and currently lives in Milan. He is considered a leading artist of the twentieth century, having pioneered the use of advertising and cinema posters in collages that expressed both the modern, urban condition and a crisis in art. Rotella began in the 1950s by ripping posters off the street and then reapplying them to canvas. Later, in the 1960s, he developed a method of serial production by projecting negatives of his images onto an emulsified canvas so that they essentially became mechanically reproduced. In subsequent years, he has furthered his experiments, applying blank sheets of paper onto advertising posters and layering images on top, for example, or incorporating the use of graffiti.

In 1992, Rotella was conferred the title of Officiel des arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang, and in 2002, he was conferred the Gold Medal for visual arts by the Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.

Rotella started to use décollage in the 1950s, when he began to reappropriate advertising and cinema posters in collages that were transferred onto canvas. Mobili Décollages is the reappropriation of those reappropriated images. In collaboration with designer Marco Ferreri, Rotella selected original artworks of his from the 1960’s for use in the collection. They were then digitally manipulated and transferred by a sublimation process whereby the images were transferred from paper onto the galvanized steel using heat. Then the sheets were sheared, folded and molded. Each piece is unique because of the varied use of the sublimated sheets.

The six-piece collection includes many of the iconic and familiar images often used by Rotella, including those of Marilyn Monroe and President Kennedy. Each piece has been produced in an edition of 99 and is numbered.
