About Our Vintage Sofa & Sectional Collection
Metro Retro carries a rotating selection of authenticated vintage and mid-century modern sofas — from sleek low-profile Knoll-era designs to bold sectionals from the American 1970s. Our sofas are sourced from estates, private collections, and commercial spaces across the country and inspected at our Pasadena, TX warehouse before listing. Whether you're looking for a single statement sofa for a living room or a full sectional for a larger space, our team can help you find the right piece from our current inventory.
What to Look for in a Vintage Mid-Century Sofa
• Frame construction: Solid hardwood frames are the hallmark of quality mid-century production. Press on the back and arms — there should be no flex or creaking.
• Leg attachment: Original legs on mid-century sofas are typically walnut, teak, or chrome, and attach via threaded inserts. Replaced legs are common and don't necessarily disqualify a piece, but they affect value.
• Cushion fill: Original down-blend or latex foam cushions have a distinct feel and are considered more desirable than modern polyurethane replacements.
• Upholstery condition: Look at the seams, piping, and tufting. Period-correct repairs (matching thread, consistent fabric) are acceptable; mismatched patches or modern fabric re-dos reduce value.
• Proportions: Authentic mid-century sofas sit lower to the ground than contemporary furniture — typically 14–17" seat height. Higher-profile frames often indicate a later reproduction.
Featured Designers in This Collection Our sofa collection features work by Florence Knoll, Milo Baughman, Ward Bennett, and Harvey Probber, among others. Visit their designer pages for more specific listings.
Frequently Asked Questions Q: Can I reupholster a vintage sofa I buy from Metro Retro? A: Yes, and it's very common. We're happy to advise on period-appropriate fabrics and can recommend upholsterers in the Houston area who specialize in vintage furniture.
Q: Do you carry sectionals? A: Yes, periodically — sectionals are harder to source in matching original condition, so availability varies. Contact us if you're looking for something specific and we'll notify you when relevant pieces come in.
