Charles Alston 1957 Large Oil on Masonite Figurative Painting

This is a wonderful example of Charles Alston's figurative work. This piece is a rare oil on masonite board. The composition features three figures that may be choir singers at church. He employs various techniques in this piece, including the dripping paint style popularized by Jackson Pollock. The painting is signed in the front right corner and signed and dated 1957 on the verso.

Charles Alston

Charles Alston was the leading African American artist emerging from the Harlem Renaissance. He mentored Jacob Lawrence, as well as Romare Bearden. He also oversaw the WPA Chapter in New York City. His works are in many museums, including the Whitney Museum and the Museum of Modern Art. Alston is also the first African American to have his work on display at the White House.
